He arrived in Rotorua in 1902, where he resided in what is now known as Wohlmann House at the Rotorua Arts Village.
Dr Wohlmann was responsible for the development of 'The Bath House', which opened in 1908. He changed his surname in 1916 to Herbert, by Deed Poll; Wohlmann was considered too Germanic for a Military Medical Officer in charge of the George V Military Hospital, and the Sanatorium, during the First World War, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
