He wahanga anō te pakiaka o taua tamaiti a Tāne, ahakoa tupu, ahakoa rau kākara, ahakoa rākau. Kai roto tonu i te ingoa rā a “Pakiaka”, te kupu “aka” e pae, e tau mārika ana.

Welcome

The English translation for “pakiaka” is the word “roots”. The roots are the very genesis of the tree. The branching roots anchor the tree from deep within Papatūānuku. As the saying goes, “without roots, the tree will fall”.

The role of this site is to bring together archives, whether written, audio or video; from times prior to the signing of the Township Agreement, to the years that followed, right up to the modern day. These resources are accessible for research, or simply to be viewed by members of our community. They are likened to the roots of our township that have been collated and stored digitally.

The beauty of the name Pakiaka is that it relates strongly to the kaupapa of a child of Tāne, which is integrated in the name “Te Aka Mauri”. A pakiaka is a major part of the child of Tāne, whether that tamaiti is a seedling, a herb, or a tree. The word “aka” also sits comfortably with the name “Pakiaka”.
