The young women are performing a classic poi dance commonly referred to as ‘te poi waka’ or the canoe poi. You can just see the tiny poi balls in their hands. It was a popular performance piece in the early days of Māori concerts that sprouted up in response to the influx of tourists to Rotorua. It’s still performed occasionally by haka groups across Aotearoa New Zealand.
