He moved to Rotorua when he was aged five or six. His father owned a menswear, haberdashery and clothing store, which was located close to the former Majestic Theatre building.

He married Nancy, from Te Puke, in 1947.The couple had two children together and six grandchildren. Nan Stafford passed away in 1997.

Don Stafford was the author of 23 books, numerous reports, and was also a guide, storyteller, regular broadcaster and lecturer. He was awarded an MBE in 1982, a CBE in 1993, and an honorary doctorate from Waikato University.
